Considerations

Features images and aspect ratios

We think it's important to pay careful attention to the way web pages are designed as well as the way they are visually represented elsewhere. The importance of social media share images should not be underestimated. As Facebook uses open graph images of a 1200630px and Twitter uses cards with 1200600px, the convention of the 'featured image' with a ~2:1 aspect ratio is inescapable.

But pages are also visually represented elsewhere on the same website, for example in 'related items' sections. Editors want to exert control over the way pages are visually represented, especially when these pages are important. Both visual consistency as well as editorial efficiency is important. Therefore, it would make sense to adopt the same 2:1 aspect ratio for featured images on the website as well.
