Introduction

Currently, a new corporate website for Het Nieuwe Instituut is being developed. A staging/demo environment can be visited here

Background

The website of Het Nieuwe Instituut is due for an update. The current corporate website was launched in 2014, and has since been expanded and improved with forms, functions and content, but it does not longer suffice on almost all fronts. Innovation is needed in content, design and information architecture. The underlying management system is also now outdated and hardly supported since 2020.

The new website will align with the institute's overall strategy, a new set of priorities and ambitions, and its new role in the coming policy plan period. The website forms the core of the organization's overall digital strategy (see 'A New Digital Home', May 2020) and is part of the concept of a Hybrid House, (Jan 2021). These basic principles have been translated into a core concept for the new website: The new website forms the core of a hybrid platform, which links the physical/offline experience of the institute to the online experience of visitors.

Priorities

The following priorities and main elements have been established:

  • Het Nieuwe Instituut should be positioned as a knowledge institute: unique, curated, contextualized content based on research and innovation.
  • The visibility of the institute and its online and offline programme should be increased
  • A shifted focus: whereas currenlty individual projects and departments are emphasized (leading to a decentralized, fragmented infrastructure), towards a more centralized approach with an emphasis on a thematic approach to design/innovation/heritage
  • Archive: include legacy content/archive in new website, to emphasize long lines and themes
  • Accessibility and hospitality in a broad sense: an accessible, mobile-friendly platform, for people with disabilities and diverse backgrounds
  • Improve the external orientation of the organization, emphasizing collaboration and network/partners in content and navigation.
  • Facilitate multivocality: foster a diversity of expressions as a priority in all aspects of the website
  • Innovative formats: content series, multichannel to make content available in various ways.
  • Overarching editorial approach: (newsletter/social media) with website as core streamlined content strategy
  • Marketing & communication: Increasing visitor numbers online (and by extension also physical visitors), and increasing visiting time (qualitatively). Website as a source of online marketing, and practical information.
  • Guarantee the durability/flexibility of the website's system to make room for innovation, new assignments.
  • Embrace open source and privacy-friendly software
