We are planning a switch from Google Analytics to Matomo, an open-source, self-hosted, privacy friendly alternative. We have installed matomo at stats.hetnieuweinstituut.nl, and we have started using it alongside Google Analytics for now.
Matomo allows us to track, analyze and store user data ourselves, instead of relying on Google. Even though it is possible to use Google Analytics in a relatively privacy-friendly way, Google is a company which is incentivized to personal data to sell ads, and we should not share the ip address of every visitor with a corporation like that – especially if a privacy-friendly alternative is readily available.
We will be testing its usefulness in the coming months, eyeing a transition to using its exclusively later this year.
